I have been thinking about ways to use my recycled scrap silver and decided to make a series of zodiac nugget necklaces. These personalized zodiac necklaces make meaningful great gifts for friends, bridesmaids or family. Each necklace uses recycled silver which is melted down and stamped. To begin I sorted through my scraps bucket and measured out 12 piles of sterling silver, about 60 grams each.
Once the scrap was sorted, I started melting down each pile into small pebble sized balls. To melt the silver, I added a bit of flux and used my solder pick to bring any loose pieces together. Once the silver melted into a ball, I held my torch there a bit longer to ensure the pieces were fully congealed.
Next, I hammered the pebbles to form them into organic shaped circles, annealing them when necessary and then hammering them again. I continued this process until I was happy with their shape, size and thickness.
After they were formed, I used my Zodiac stamps and stamped each one. I made sure that the impression was deep enough to be seen with or without a black patina.
Once they were stamped with the zodiac symbol, I marked out where I wanted the jump ring bail to go, and then continued to shape the spot by sawing, sanding and filling down a small crevice for the jump ring.
Next, I used my third-hand tweezers to position the jump ring so it had a clean and flush fit to the zodiac pebbles. I soldered the jump ring on and pickled each one clean.
The last step was the tumble, polish, and add a black patina to the stamped area. This is how they turned out - I was quite happy with them! And I think they will make great personalized gifts for friends and family, I might even keep a taurus pendant for myself!
